openQRM Enterprise Edition – FAQ
What is the openQRM Community Edition?
The openQRM Community Edition is a fully open-source project licensed under the GPLv2, hosted on sourceforge.net. To provide a sustainable evolution of our core product, openQRM Enterprise GmbH offers a commercially licensed version (the “Enterprise Edition”) to professional customers, while at the same time being committed to merge the development effort with the open-source version at official releases. The current stable version of the openQRM Community Edition is always available at sourceforge.net.
If you are building professional datacenter platforms using openQRM and if you need reliable support options or access to the "latest and greatest" additional features, you might want to consider taking a look at the openQRM Enterprise Edition.

If you are building professional datacenter platforms using openQRM and if you need reliable support options or access to the "latest and greatest" additional features, you will want to consider taking a look at the openQRM Enterprise Edition.
What are the differences comparing the enterprise and community editions?
The openQRM Enterprise Edition provides additional features for professional openQRM users, available under the commercial openQRM Enterprise License. These additional functionalities and add-ons are available:
- i-do-it CMDB plugin for automated datacenter and system documentation
- Native support for Coraid Storage

- Out-of-Band management plugin (IPMI) to save power consumption and cost
- Hardware fencing for the high-availability plugin
- LDAP plugin for centralized user management
Additionally, professional support and implementation services are available to Enterprise Edition customers, only.
How much does openQRM Enterprise Edition cost?
This depends on the number of openQRM Servers (physical or virtual machines running the openQRM server software) and Client systems (physical machines only) you want to manage using openQRM Enterprise Edition. At least 1 Server license is needed to get started with 1 Server managing 2 Clients (e.g. Hypervisor hosts running an unlimited number of VMs each). If you are managing more than 2 Client systems, you need additional Client License Packages.
A Server License grants the perpetual right to use openQRM Enterprise Edition on 1 server appliance. It includes 1 year of update and bugfix access and entitles to professional support via the openQRM Enterprise GmbH support channels. Server licenses can be renewed if needed on a yearly basis.
Client License Packs grant the right to manage the needed number of physical systems (Clients) with openQRM Enterprise Edition, on a monthly pay-per-use basis.
Please see our price list for all licensing details.
Does this mean I have to renew my licenses on a yearly basis?
No. We don’t force our customers to renew the openQRM Enterprise Edition Server Licenses. You are free to buy the needed number of Server Licenses once and use these forever without renewing. Client License Packages can be flexibly purchased on a monthly pay-per-use basis. Please keep in mind that we do not offer any updates, security bugfixes, service or support to customers running installations that are not properly licensed.
But we are pretty sure that you will love being able to upgrade at any time to newer versions (available at least twice a year) that will introduce major enhancements. Additionally, license renewal will make sure that you have access to our Professional Services Team helping you out with maintenance and support questions. License renewals are available at a returning customer special offer price, please see our price list.
Can I get a test/demo license to preview openQRM Enterprise features?
Yes. Please contact us to get all you need to get started with a free 30 days trial license. It includes 1 Server and 2 Client Licenses.
What are the benefits of going dual-licensed to the Open-Source community?

What kind of storage types does openQRM support?
openQRM supports the following storage-server types:
- NFS (NAS)
- iSCSI (SAN)
- Aoe/Coraid (AOE SAN)
- NetApp (iSCSI SAN)
- Local-disk (transferring server-images to the local disk)
- LVM-Nfs (NFS on top of LVM2 to allow fast-cloning)
- LVM-iSCSI (iSCSI on top of LVM2 to allow fast-cloning)
- LVM-Aoe (Aoe on top of LVM2 to allow fast-cloning)
- Equallogic (iSCSI SAN)
- ZFS (iSCSI SAN)
What kind of virtualization technologies does openQRM support?
openQRM supports and seamlessly manages VMware, Xen, KVM, openVZ, LXC, Virtualbox and Citrix XenServer virtual machines and helps you with P2V (physical to virtual), V2P (virtual to physical) and V2V (virtual to virtual) migration. This not only means server appliances can move from physical to virtual systems (and back) easily but also that they can be migrated from virtualization technology A to virtualization technology B without any hassle.
Does openQRM support high-availability?
Yes. Both the openQRM server and the managed clients can be made highly-available. For HA openQRM Server setups please contact us for licensing and technical support. Managing HA systems with openQRM adds flexible possibilities: For example, if you need to run 10 custom servers in a high-availability setup, you normally would need another 10 custom stand-by systems. With openQRM you can make them all use just 1 (or more) stand-by system(s), saving you 9 servers idling around. And there is more fun with HA: You can save just ALL your stand-by servers and simply bring up a virtual-machine as stand-by. In case of problems, HA-appliances will then fail-over from physical to virtual. You can also fail-over from virtualization technology A to technology B (e.g. from KVM to VMware VM's).
Can I build my own cloud environment using openQRM?
Yes. At first openQRM helps you to make your current IT-infrastructure more flexible. Independent if you have physical or virtual servers. For us both are just resources. After configuring your own infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) environment with openQRM you are able to let your users receive virtual servers, applications, storage, workstations, etc. through the openQRM Cloud Portal. You can also implement your own pay-as-you-go scenario using openQRMs full-featured cloud billing system. You can build your own Cloud, IaaS, PaaS and of course SaaS environment with openQRM. You are totally flexible and define your own use cases.
Am I restricted to a deployment method using openQRM?
No. Deployments in openQRM are completely transparent and plug-able. In detail this means we made the step of "mounting the rootfs" plug-able so you can basically boot-up from any storage-device you want by adding a small plugin for it, e.g. one could write a "gmailfs-storage" plugin which takes care of mounting a server's root-filessystem via gmailfs, just because it can be done.
Another advantage of openQRM is that it then can transform server-images from type A to type B, e.g. you can deploy an appliance which will get a pre-defined server-image from an nfs-server and dumps this to its local disk, then it will just continue boot-up from its local disk. You can also grab an image from a local disk and e.g. transfer it to an Iscsi-Lun and so on... since the deployment is so generic in openQRM we basically support any combination of image transfer and transformation. If it is a root filesystem, we can boot it - either on real hardware or within some virtual machine, it's up to you.
